Africa Money Heist: Covid - 19 Wage Theft in Garment Global Supply Chains on Wednesdays, July 7 & 14, 2-4PM GMT
The ASIA FLOW WAGE ALLIANCE (AFWA) marks the launching of a new strategy – and a first-of-its-kind union-led litigation strategy across Asia -- to hold Global North apparel brands jointly liable within the national legal jurisdictions of Global South production countries. As you know the pandemic has laid bare glaring gaps in the governance of global supply chains. We need to develop new strategies that have the capacity to shift significantly the power imbalance in global supply chains.

At the first event on July 7th AFWA will release the most in depth, rigorous study on wage theft suffered by garment workers during Covid 19. The six-country regional study was conducted by our partner garment unions and surveyed over 2000 workers (mostly women) across Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The two-hour event will feature scholars on garment global supply chains, and Asian union leaders who will share challenges during the pandemic and limitations around collective bargaining in their respective countries.
July 14th is the second event of this two-part series- where Asian trade unions, along with lawyers, judges, corporate accountability activists from across US and Europe will discuss new strategies for holding global apparel brands’ responsible for wage theft. The two-hour event will discuss “joint liability” as a new strategy.
AFWA will hold these events at a crucial time when garment workers in global supply chains, reeling from wage theft during the 2020 pandemic, are again being plunged into further crisis in 2021.
AFWA hopes you will join them for this important meeting. You can register for the event here.
